The resistance and Hall voltage are measured on a rectangular strip of germanium as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field. From the results obtained the energy gap, specific conductivity, type of charge carrier and the carrier mobility are determined. The System consists of a redesigned Hall Effect module and 3 heatable carrier boards which are fitted with p- and n-doped germanium crystals and a non-doped Ge-crystal. The boards plug into the Hall module which requires only a 12 Vac power supply. The Hall module provides all operating parameters for the samples.
The experiment can be carried out with a voltmeter or the data can be collected, displayed and stored on a computer using the Cobra 3 Interface.
The Hall module provides:
• An adjustable constant current for the sample and for the integrated sample heater.
• Digital display to show either the sample current or sample temperature.
• Sample heater with fully automatic temperature control system to avoid damage to the samples.
• Electronic compensating circuit for Hall voltage offset.
• An RS232 Interface for computer connection.
