X-Ray Source with three Sources

Student laboratory apparatus using fully-shielded soft X-rays up to 35 kV with internal digitally controlled power supplies and stepping motor driven goniometer. This apparatus is suitable for a full course in the principles and applications of x-rays. Some of the available experiments are listed below.

Luminous screen observation (straight propagation)

X-ray photography

Ionization current

Ion dose rate (dosimetry)

Laue and Debye-Scherrer pictures

Bremsstrahlung spectra and characteristic lines

Absorption edges Moseley's law

Duane-Hunt displacement law

The apparatus has three interchangeable X-Ray tube with Copper, Molybdenum or Iron anodes so that radiation with different emmission spectra are available. X-rays are collimated by a pair of pin-hole diaphragms emerging horizontally into the large, easily viewed experiment area. Access is provided by an interlocked sliding transparent door.

As soon as the door is opened, two independent safety circuits cut off the high voltage. A control panel on the front of the unit has all required feed and signal jacks making connection to the interior of the apparatus. Two stepping motors rotate the analyzer crystal and GM tube independently or together at a fixed ratio (e.g. 1:2 for Bragg reflection), with an high angular resolution and with three adjustable scan rates. An analog signal proportional to the angle is available for data recording. The easily viewed angle scale shows the position of the crystal and the detector.
